Sunday afternoon, June 9 2013, at 3:00: My co-host, Jim Battaglia and I will air part of our interview with Richard Jay-Alexander about his role in producing the PBS Il Volo concert, “We Are Love” which is being featured on WCNY on Sunday, 6/9 at 8 p.m. and Tuesday, 6/11 at 10 p.m and the upcoming “Buon Natale” Christmas special.
We were fortunate to have caught up with Richard just as he had finished his work with the three teenagers Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble known as Il Volo in Miami and before he left for London to tour with Barbra Streisand.
Many listeners know Richard who was born to Frank and Dulce Fernandez of Solvay. The veteran producer began his stage career on Broadway as a dancer, singer and actor and then took on the roles of executive producer for Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon and Les Miserables and has worked with top artists like Bernadette Peters, Bette Midler and Kristin Chenoweth.

Il Volo: Chart Beat Meet & Greet (Video)
The trio discusses its fresh blend of pop and classical, as its latest release roars onto the Classical Crossover Albums chart
"What Il Volo does is we don't sing opera and we don't really sing pop. We sing classical songs in a fresh way and pop songs in a really classical way," the trio's tenor Piero Barone explains.
Il Volo, rounded out by fellow tenor Ignazio Boschetto and baritone Gianluca Ginoble, recently stopped by Billboard's New York studios to chat about its music, including its new "We Are Love: Special Edition," which bows at No. 3 this week on Billboard's Classical Crossover Albums chart. In its original release, the set debuted and peaked at No. 2 in December.
Il Volo first arrived on the tally in April 2011 with its self-titled effort, which went on to lead for four weeks. The threesome reigned again last year, for an extraordinary 17 weeks, with "Il Volo … Takes Flight: Live from the Detroit Opera House." In just more than two years, all seven of the act's chart entries have reached the top 10, the most among all artists in that span.
