Il Volo – Orpheum Theatre – August 25, 2013
Italian popera trio, Il Volo kicked off their headlining “We Are Love Tour” at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver last night. Supporting their November 2012 release “We Are Love“ the trio of Piero Barone(20), Ignazio Boschetto (18) and Gianluca Ginoble (18) are still riding the high from backing Barbra Streisand on tour last year, appearances on American Idol and are now making the most of the recognition to carve their own niche.
Kicking off their 20 date Canada/US tour (which is followed by another 22 shows in Latin America) at Vancouver’s elegant Orpheum Theatre was a perfect venue for their elegant vocals and classic matinee idol good looks, like a mashup of The Jonas Brothers and The Three Tenors. Starting with “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” (in Italian), the 2 hour set included a mix of contemporary songs and classical standards in English, Italian, Spanish and French. The three young men who have vocal range beyond their years each performed a couple of solos in between the group numbers, the audience was enthralled, leaping to their feet after many numbers. The audience also enjoyed the witty banter and occasional stumbles over English words, Ignazio proving to be the most playful one of the trio. Going back and forth between languages and classical and contemporary kept the set lively and meant there was something for everyone to enjoy. Even if you didn’t know the words or know the song there was no doubting that these performers were astounding talents. “Beautiful Day”, “Splendida”, “Angel”, “Surrender” and “Maria” filled out the set list. They paid tribute to Barbra Streisand before Ignazio’s solo version of “Memory”, Frank Sinatra before Gianluca sang “Night & Day”, also the group spotlighted Placido Domingo when singing “Il Canto”, their duet with the maestro.
Although it’s only been just over 3 years since they met on the Italian TV talent show Ti Lascio Una Canzone, their stage and vocal chemistry is perfect, no wonder the judges put them together as a trio to sing their final song of the night “O Sole Mio”.

  1. Thank you, Jay, for expressing the glory and history of our IL VOLO boys. Their performance was stunning and well deserving of your review.

If I could just clarify one point, their opener was actually "Questo Amore", the Italian version of the Aerosmith song "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

    In gratitude and delight,
