Local PBS affiliate WTVS-TV (Channel 56) has a lot to be proud of as of late.
The station's production of "Il Volo Takes Flight," which features the amazing trio of young Italian tenors, is going national.
Detroit Public Television partnered with the Michigan Opera Theatre, using the Detroit Opera House and MOT's 49-member orchestra, for the October concert. It was broadcast locally in December and will air nationally beginning this weekend as a part of PBS' national fundraising drive. The show airs locally at 8 p.m. Saturday.
The CD and DVD of the show hit store shelves Tuesday.
Meanwhile, WTVS also is increasing its presence in Detroit with its new Midtown studio, located inside Wayne State University's historic Maccabees building at Woodward Avenue and Putnam Street.
DPTV has partnered with WSU to share the iconic studio space — where back in the day Soupy Sales did his show for WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) — to produce weekly shows, including "Leaders on Leadership."
While WTVS is still headquartered in Wixom, its Midtown Detroit studio and HD production truck will give the station the access it desires to remain active and relevant in Detroit, says Rich Homberg, WTVS' president and general manager.
"There's a need for us to be more involved with Detroit," he says. "And with the studio and our mobile studio/production truck, we're more nimble and involved than ever."
DIY Network 'crashes' in Metro Detroit
Licensed contractor and "House Crashers" host Josh Temple recently made a stop at ABC Warehouse in Livonia to surprise one lucky resident with a free home-improvement makeover.
Temple and his crew helped a yet-to-be-named local do-it-yourselfer crash, smash, demolish and transform his or her most daunting indoor home-improvement project, just as he does every week on the show. Part of the episode, which will air in July, also was shot inside ABC Warehouse.
"House Crashers" airs 9 p.m. Mondays on the DIY Network.
