With still-developing English speaking proficiency, the three teenage members of Il Volo are young men of few words.
But when it comes to Detroit, and specifically the Detroit Opera House — where the Italian vocal trio filmed and recorded its first live album and PBS special Oct. 27, Ignazio Boschetto has nothing but praise. “Well, you know, it’s a good memory,” Boschetto, 17, says about “Il Volo Takes Flight — Live From the Detroit Opera House,” which was commercially released in February and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Classical Albums chart. “It was big emotion ... and a big moment for us because the Detroit Opera House is so charming, and everybody sang there — Charlie Chaplin and Michael Jackson, everyone. When someone told me that I was shocked. “Detroit is the town of everyone. And now it’s the town of Il Volo, as well.” Boschetto and his group mates — Piero Barone, 19, and Gianluca Ginoble, 17 — formed in 2009 through the Italian singing competition TV show “Ti lascio una canzone” (“Leavin’ You a Song”), and their debut “Il Volo” also topped the classical chart, in 2010. An EP of “Christmas Favorites” followed in 2011. Il Volo has finished recording its second studio album, which is expected in November and will include “classical moments and pop moments,” Boschetto says, although he adds that the group is “keeping it secret” for the time being. But the trio is even more excited about touring this fall with Barbra Streisand, opening for the diva as well as performing with her during her show. “Our manager is a big fan of hers, so I started to know about her because of him, and then I got many CDs of hers ... and I love her,” Boschetto says. “We met her at (the recording session for) ‘We Are the World (25 For Haiti)’ in 2010. She’s nice. “I think that two years ago I was in my room playing PlayStation or with my friends playing (soccer). Now I’m here. We are having this big tour with Barbra Streisand, and we are going to sing with her. So I think the right words are that the dream is coming true.” Il Volo performs at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24, at the Meadow Brook Music Festival on the Oakland University campus in Rochester Hills. Tickets are $39.50-$79.50 pavilion, $25 lawn. Call 248-377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
