Never forget to take flight

“Never Forget ‘Il Volo’” were the last words the three young Italian tenors said before leaving the stage at the Essar Centre last night.
And it would be hard to try as they proved why they are an international sensation at last’s night’s performance at the Essar centre.
Nominated for Best New Artist and Best New Album by a Duo or a Group by the Latin Grammy Awards just last year, the young men have reached world-wide stardom all before the age of eighteen.
As approximately 2500 local patrons entered into the stadium, the excitement of the viewers was ever present as they patiently waited for the three teenage boys to take the stage.
With bright white lights cascading over Piero Baron (17), Ignazio Boschetto (16), and Gianluca Ginoble (16), the audience could not hold back their admiration and offered epic applause and resounding cheers of praise.
Members in the audience were found clapping and singing along to several well-known and classical songs including the upbeat “Finiculi, Funicula” and “O Sole Mio,” which the band performed in an encore performance.

Receiving several standing ovations, it was apparent that ‘Il Volo’s’ visit to the Essar was well-received.
Pat Carlascio, a retired school teacher from St. Francis Elementary School said “I came with my mother and my wife and we couldn’t be happier. A world class performance.”
Other spectators sat in awe as the three singers, all under the age of eighteen hit high notes almost comparable to opera with such strength, talent, and ease.
Kicking of their North American tour of August 12th it was a wonderful opportunity for “Il Volo” to warm-up their vocal strings and present to the community of Sault Ste. Marie their amazing vocal capabilities.
Their music was a testament to how beautiful the Italian language is and allowed several audience members to reflect upon the homes from which the immigrated from.
“They are singing songs, I remember when I was a child growing up in Italy. The songs are very old and have reminded me of those memories,” a 70 year old Calabrese woman said.
It was a perfect means to celebrate a culture that Sault Ste. Marie is currently honouring with the Marconi on their 100th anniversary.
President of the Marconi, Tony Celli was thrilled, “Amazing! It brought the whole Italian community together and was an opportunity to congratulate the Marconi. It was very nice to see young people attend because at first we thought it would appeal to an older audience. It is nice to see that the Italian culture will be carried on in the local community and the atmosphere because of this was wonderful!”
He went on to say a special thank you to those involved on the Marconi’s 100th Anniversary Committee.
“It was great that the people in charge like Armando Pulente, Gino Cavallo, and Dominic Carrot, were able to bring in Il Volo. We need more events like this because it does bring the Italian community closer together. I know that when they sang “Mama,” many people got emotional, I was crying to tell you the truth because I was 14 years old when I immigrated to Canada.”
To match the tone and theme of the songs, dramatic lighting was used in combination with three large overhead screens which showed pictures of various scenes, people, and the gentlemen themselves.
“The people and Marconi members that I spoke to really enjoyed the concert.  Most of them, including myself, were really amazed at how powerful the singers’ voices are for being so young," said Gino Cavallo. "We enjoyed that the boys sang in English & Spanish as well as their traditional Italian songs.  From the Marconi’s viewpoint, we were very proud to be able to attract such a high profile concert to help celebrate our 100th anniversary.”
Near the end of the performance, the three boys were offering Soo Greyhound jerseys which they accepted and put on while on stage.
Before departing, the gentlemen offered the audience a small piece of audience, “Never forget ‘Il Volo,’ which translates roughly to “Never forget to take flight,” an inspirational message to those in the audience to follow their own aspirations.
