Il Volo at the Fillmore: Can you feel the love, Christmas cheer?

As one-third of the dashing young Italian pop-opera trio Il Volo,  Piero Barone has seen his share of unusual clothing items thrown his way onstage. But he expects South Florida fans to be more modest Wednesday night, being such a chilly winter evening and all.
“Yes, we would like to see a lot of warm clothes, and the ugliest sweaters!” Barone says with a laugh, describing the trio’s imminent Christmas concert. Yes, Christmas.
Il Volo will perform two shows this week at the Fillmore Miami Beach, each being recorded for an upcoming special on PBS,  no stranger to Il Volo, with repeated broadcasts of their 2012 debut special, “Il Volo Takes Flight.”
On Tuesday, the concert is called “We Are Love,” celebrating the trio’s fall release of the same name, backed by a 26-piece orchestra.  It is scheduled to air June 1.
On Wednesday, the audience will serve as a key visual when Il Volo records a Christmas special called “Buon Natale,” scheduled to begin airing in November, with holiday favorites from “Silent Night” to “Feliz Navidad.”

Speaking during a break in rehearsals on Monday, Barone admits that, notwithstanding the recent cold snap,  “it’s crazy” doing a Christmas show during Spring Break on Miami Beach. But this is when such programming is created, and South Florida has always been a special place for Barone (19), Ignazio Boschetto (18) and Gianluca Ginoble (18), pictured from left.
“It is because we have so many fans here, in West Palm Beach, in Fort Lauderdale. We have done four concerts in South Beach and all of them sold out. The fans here love us and we love them,” Barone says.
He says the stage will have all the holiday cheer you expect on Wednesday night, including a Christmas tree. That warm fuzziness may come in handy.
“First of all, we’re going to bring the AC in the theater way down,” Barone says with a laugh. But on the sweaters, he’s not kidding. Fans in Christmas attire, especially ugly sweaters, may win a chance to meet Il Volo onstage.
Barone says the Tuesday show will include familiar songs from "We Are Love," which ranges from arena-rock anthems such as Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” and U2’s “Beautiful Day” (below) to the opera touchstone “Il Canto” (recorded with Placido Domingo). But the concert also will feature four new “surprises” that will be part of a repackaged version of “We Are Love” that will be released with the PBS special in June.
“They are surprises, but I will tell you this one,” Barone says, singing into the phone:  “Can … you feel  … the love tonight … You know this one?”
