Ignazio Boschetto speaks about the soaring success of Il Volo

When Italian trio Il Volo takes the stage, prepare to be swept away by the powerful passion only Italian opera can bring. Ignazio Boschetto, 18, Piero Barone, 20, and Gianluca Ginoble, 18, launched Il Volo in 2009. The group’s name, which means “the flight” has rocketed to global fame with their hit rendition of “O Sole Mio.”
In 2011, they appeared on HBO’s “Entourage” and the following year, performed with Barbra Streisand. Boschetto phoned us from Montreal Sept. 9 where Il Volo performed for 5,000 people the previous night. Currently touring in America promoting new albums We Are Love and Mas Que Amor, the vibrant young singer is definitely living la dolce vita these days.
“I think each moment of our career has been so special and important for us,” Boschetto said of his group's international superstardom. “For us, it’s a dream. Every single part of our day is like dreaming and we didn’t expect any of this. Being here after three years, everything has happened so fast. It’s really all a dream come true.”
As the first Italian artists to sign with a U.S. label after inking a deal with Universal Music Group, Il Volo has done what few young groups have been able to achieve—captivate audiences from ages 7 to 70. When I covered Il Volo’s sold out show at The Fillmore last September, hundreds of fans swooned over the velvet-voiced Italian stallions. “Someone threw a bra on stage at us once,” Boschetto recalled. “That was probably the funniest thing that’s happened so far. We try to be ourselves. Whether we are on stage or off stage, we are just three normal, simple guys.”
While Il Volo sings in Italian, French, Spanish and English, Boschetto says German is the most difficult language to sing in. He then broke into a German rendition of “Silent Night” to provide an example. However, according to Boschetto, singing in Italian will remain the group’s favorite and first language to perform in. “The island of Sicilia is all-beautiful—the sea, the beach, everything is beautiful in Sicily,” he added. “They are warm people.”
Although Boschetto says his group rehearses daily, there is still such a natural flow to Il Volo’s vocals. “It’s really important to train every day. We train before our concerts and do our vocal exercises,” Boschetto added. Citing Stevie Wonder and Brian McKnight as his musical heroes, his Il Volo counterparts have their own musical tastes. “Gianluca really loves Frank Sinatra and Piero loves every kind of music from Pink to opera,” he added. “We have three different types of music we love.”
Aside from their vocal stylings, the members of Il Volo also have their own distinct fashion favorites. Barone is known for his funky eyeglasses, Ginoble for his sleek, fitted suits and Boschetto for his funkier, more playful style. “All three of us really like to shop at Zara. And of course, I really love the Italian style like Dolce & Gabbana and Giorgio Armani,” Boschetto mentioned.
Born in Bologna, but raised in Sicily, in January, Boschetto plans to move back to Bologna where he hopes to lead a more private life between recording new music and touring. “When I’m home, I used to play soccer with friends or hang out. When I was younger, my father and I used to do model airplanes together,” Boschetto said. “I enjoy spending time with my family. Family is really important to me. They gave me life and the opportunity to follow my dream. I think they were the first to believe in me and believe in us [Il Volo]."
On Il Volo’s next album, Boschetto is excited about the possibility of releasing an original. “I write my own music and I have a lot of songs,” he said. “Maybe on our next album, we’ll put a song I wrote in Spanish on that.”

Il Volo will perform 8 p.m. Sept. 21 at American Airlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Blvd, in Miami. Call 786-777-1000 or visit Ilvolomusic.com to purchase tickets or details.

  1. Wow! Ignazio, I remember at least a year ago when you folks spoke about writing your own songs!

I would love to have one of your very own songs on your next album! Can't you just imagine what Gatica would do with the instrumentation, harmony, and mixing for it?! Keep us posted!

And I'm glad you can have some time out of your year in Bologna (starting in January!) leading a more private life between recording and touring. We will miss you, but your happiness and chosen lifestyle are so important! Keep being yourself and honoring your true desires.

Sweetest wishes for joy and fulfillment,
