Il Volo just "three simple guys"
They may be international stars, but the three members of Il Volo don’t want to act like that.
“What we want to show to the people is that we are three simple guys,” says Ignazio Boschetto, at 18 the middle member of the Italian classical pop trio. “We just want to do really simple concerts with a lot of emotion. We hope people are gonna cry, that they’re gonna laugh and we’re gonna have fun together.
“It’s not just seeing a show with us. We show our emotion, and we want people to show theirs and just come along for a journey.”
Il Volo’s trip has been a happy one since Boschetto, 20-year-old Piero Barone and Gianluca Ginoble, 18, met in 2009 as part of an Italian TV music competition — which Ginoble won. Il Volo has released two studio albums, including this year’s “We Are Love,” as well as a Christmas EP and the 2012 live album and DVD “Il Volo ... Takes Flight: Live From the Detroit Opera House.” This year the group filmed a pair of PBS specials in Miami, including a holiday show that will yield another album.
And last fall the trio took a break from headlining to support and also perform with Barbra Streisand.
“Omigod, I think it’s one of the experiences we will never forget for the rest of our life,” Boschetto says. “Barbra Streisand is a legend. To have us sing with her was really beautiful. She was like our aunt. We got a lot of (advice) from her.
“When we were on stage with her, I was thinking, ‘Omigod, I’m with Barbra Streisand and my two friends, on this stage with all these people in front of us. Is this true?’ It was like a dream. I needed someone to wake me up — but I didn’t want to.”
Il Volo performs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Fox Theatre, 2211 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Tickets are $35-$99.50. Call 313-471-6611 or visit www.olympiaentertainment.com.
