Who is Il Volo?

Not long ago, three young gentlemen all under the age of 18, amazed listeners the world over with their stunning vocal prowess.

Piero Baron (17), Ignazio Boschetto (16), and Gianluca Ginoble (16) were first recognized just a few shorts years ago in May 2009 for their rendition of the Italian standard O Sole Mio on the Italian talent show, Ti Lascio Una Canzone.

From that moment on, the three boys realized their destiny to entertain the world with their enriched tenor voices, charismatic attitudes, and love for Italian music.

According to their official website, the boys express a desire to share their talent, especially with people their own age, and named themselves “Il Volo,” which means “flight.”

Considering this, it's no surprise that the Marconi Club decided to invite the group to Sault Ste. Marie to help celebrate its 100th anniversary.

President of the Marconi Club, Tony Celli, believes that the presence of Il Volo will not only be entertaining for those that enjoy Italian music, but may encourage the younger generation to participate in the local Italian community.

“It is my hope that we can promote our culture, to honour our four fathers who a hundred years ago started a small group here in Sault Ste. Marie, to carry on the traditions of the Italian people to pass onto their children, even though so far away from their home country. For this reason, it is important that the younger generation gets involved. It is rewarding to see them take interest in their heritage and that they may be capable of carrying on our traditions” Celli said.

To Celli, it is amazing that the band will perform for the community considering the three tenors are used to performing in much larger centres with populations over one million.

Gino Cavallo of the Marconi’s 100th Anniversary Committee adds: “To celebrate the Marconi’s 100th Anniversary we decided to invite this special guest and we cannot be more excited. They are extremely popular in Italy and continue to prove that they are up and coming entertainers by performing amazing songs. In fact, after they stop here, Il Volo will be kicking off their North American Tour.”

With the upcoming tour starting on August 10, Sault Ste. Marie's Essar Centre is proud to be Il Volo's first stop.

Some of their most popular songs include Ti Voglio Tanto Bene, their famous O Sole Mio, and Finiculi, Funicula.

“Singing in a variety of different languages, including Spanish, Italian, and with the boys being in their late-teens, we intend to attract a diverse audience, including the younger generation and most importantly attempt to ensure one of the Marconi’s goals to persevere the Italian heritage in Sault Ste. Marie.”

Although limited, tickets remain available for the August 10 performance at the Essar Centre box office for $77.95.
