Showbiz Analysis with Il Volo
Once upon a time, pasta was America’s most popular Italian import. Then Il Volo hit the stage and the airwaves, and no one could get enough of the impressive Italian operatic pop trio. When Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto, and Gianluca Ginoble merged their solo acts, success came knocking and hasn’t stopped since. With a platinum debut and their new sophomore album, We Are Love, Il Volo’s been rocking the charts and making the rounds with music legends including Barbra Streisand. The teens haven’t slowed down, performing and capturing fans on PBS and American Idol and nearly every major talk show in the United States.
As Il Volo prepares for their upcoming American tour (including a stop at Radio City Music Hall), I had the pleasure of interviewing the talented trio for my iTunes podcast Whine At 9. Fun, but also mature beyond their years, Piero (19), Ignazio (18), and Gianluca (17) are proof that the sky’s the limit when talent and teamwork collide.
Armed with a unique musical style, Il Volo has quickly captured three generations of fans. This cross-generational popularity makes their music family-centric, which is a rare and embraceable phenomenon. “We sing operatic pop in a fresh way. We sing classical songs in a pop way and pop songs in a classical way,” says Gianluca.
The young men behind Il Volo had solo careers in mind when an Italian television producer put their voices together and magic happened. Piero notes that he quickly felt like he had added two more brothers to his family. “We are colleagues because we work together,” admits Ignazio, “but we are really brothers.” Sharing the spotlight can be tough for siblings, but the teens’ stage presence is like a parent’s dream come true—everybody gets along. “We are living this dream together all around the world and we are sharing our music with our fans and with all the people,” says Piero.
Il Volo’s success continues to soar, as does the young men’s gratitude and respect for their fans and those guiding their music. (Their manager discovered Andrea Bocelli.) “We have a great team behind us,” notes Gianluca, who is seconded by the rest of the trio. “For a good dream,” says Ignazio, “you’ve got to have good people around you… We are so lucky that we have people that work with us that are treating us like three guys following the dream…” These days it looks like Il Volo’s dreams are already coming true.
