Modesto’s Gallo Center targets younger audience with Il Volo
The downtown performing arts venue also announced a June 5 show by the operatic trio Il Volo. The performances add to a series of high-profile entertainers Gallo has attracted to Modesto recently, including musicians John Legend and Rob Thomas, whose shows sold out shortly after going on sale.
“We are thrilled to have booked both of these popular acts. Getting these acts is part skill and part luck,” said Gallo Center CEO Lynn Dickerson. “The 2013-14 season is going down in the record books as the most successful yet for the Gallo Center.”
After starting as a coffee-shop singer in San Diego, Mraz broke through to the big time with his sunny, catchy sound. The two-time Grammy winner’s hits include “The Remedy (I Don’t Worry),” “I’m Yours” and “Lucky.” His Gallo show is part of an acoustic tour with guest Raining Jane, a four-woman indie-pop group from Los Angeles....
Italian trio Il Volo’s oldest member is 20. The young men started the group as teenagers in 2009 and have rocketed to international fame. The trio has appeared on the HBO series “Entourage,” the hit singing competition “American Idol” and at high-profile venues.
Tickets for Il Volo go on sale to the public March 10 and will be $49 to $99.
Dickerson said Mraz and Il Volo should appeal to a younger demographic. The center had, months earlier, submitted an offer to Il Volo, which has a strong Facebook and YouTube presence, and nearly had given up on the group before hearing back. By contrast, the Mraz booking was last-minute. The singer-songwriter had a free date on his small acoustic tour and contacted Gallo officials earlier this week to see if there was an opening.
“Jason Mraz is going to be another John Legend-type of success,” Dickerson said. “He has almost 14 million Facebook likes, and appeals to the under-35 crowd that I’m trying to attract. I expect it to sell out before the weekend is over.”
The Legend show sold out in less than half an hour when it went on sale last month. For more information on the Gallo shows, call (209) 338-2100 or go to www.galloarts.org.
