Il Volo to perform at American Music Theatre

The singing group known as Il Volo will bring its melodious sounds to the Lancaster area on Sunday.
   
The trio — Piero Barone, 18, Ignazio Boschetto, 17, and Gianluca Ginoble, 17 — is known for its renditions of classical songs and standards such as “O Sole Mio” and “Il Mondo,” a style of music dubbed “operatic pop” or “popera.”
   
The group’s members first met and performed together on an Italian television talent show in 2009. After hooking up with a manager and producer, they recorded their self-titled debut album in 2010.
   
Il Volo (which means “flight” in Italian) first came to prominence in the U.S. with the trio’s 2011 appearance on “American Idol.” Following that performance, their album went to No. 6 on the Billboard Top 2000 charts and has remained on the Classical Crossover Chart since March 2012.
   
The group has appeared on such shows as “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” “Today” and “Good Morning America” and filmed the PBS special “Il Volo Takes Flight.” The trio recently joined Barbra Streisand as her special guests for several of her upcoming concerts.

Il Volo appeals to a variety of ages

Move over, Justin Beiber. Watch your back, One Direction. Il Volo is coming to town.
   
For the uninitiated, Il Volo is the latest teenage singing group to take America by storm. The difference here is that this male trio, consisting of Piero Barone, 18, Ignazio Boschetto, 17, and Gianluca Ginoble, 17, prefer to belt out classical songs and standards such as “O Sole Mio” than the usual electronic-infused pop that dominates the charts.
   
Their style, dubbed “operatic pop” or “popera,” has been a hit with young and old alike, according to Ginoble.
   
“Our goal was to bring this kind of music to all people: Kids from 1 to those 92. Just like the Christmas song,” he said.
   
He said not a lot of artists span generations. “Justin Beiber only has the teenagers. Andrea Bocelli has only the 30-year-olds. Il Volo is not this way,” he said.

Concert review: Il Volo serves up teen popera with a twist (andscreaming girls) at the Plaza

If I told you that a bunch of girls would scream for a trio of operatic singers at the Plaza Theatre, you'd probably shake your head and ask if my next move was to sell you some swamp land near Marfa.
Well, you'd better buy it because a bunch of young females, as well as middle-aged and older men and women, bought into Il Volo Tuesday night at the old movie palace.
About 1,920 of them in fact, or about 80 shy of a complete sell-out.
Not bad for a group that's been together three years, whose members are 17 and 19 years old, who sing in Italian, Spanish, English and French and whose repertoire ranges from Neapolitan classics to American show tunes.
Il Volo, or "the flight" in their native Italian, are the teen pop answer to Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli and even the Three Tenors.
They are young men with mature voices, voices, by the way, they're still growing into.
Tuesday's show, part of their second North American tour, was their El Paso debut. The audience seemed to include a lot of people from the other side of the border, where the group's self-titled debut album was a big seller, and American fans who know them from their performance of "O Solo Mio" last year on "American Idol" or last February's PBS fund drive airings of "Il Volo Takes Flight," recorded last October in Detroit.
While it may seem improbable that people would flock to see a young, so-called popera group, it made perfect sense Tuesday night.

Piero Barone sounds like a typical teenager.
He loves girls and sports cars and wears his signature red glasses because "they are cool and I feel comfortable with them," not because he needs to.
But in one obvious way, the 19-year-old doesn't sound like a typical teenager -- his voice. He's got a booming operatic tenor that belies his age.
Barone is one third of Il Volo, the unlikely popera -- operatic pop -- singing sensations from Italy. The trio will perform in El Paso for the first time Tuesday at the Plaza Theatre. The tour, their second in North America in two years, includes a handful of dates opening for Barbra Streisand and will be followed by the November release of their second studio album.
The group's been on quite a roll since debuting in the United States two years ago.
"The reaction we are having with the audiences is making our dream come true," Barone said from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. "They make us believe that we are bringing our emotion and our kind of music, (which) we were born with in Italy, around the world, and we appreciate it because people love it."
Not bad for a bunch of guys from Sicily and central Italy who'd never met until they were cast on an Italian TV show.

Il Volo: Miami Beach Concert!

Il Volo chills out on a couple of steps while performing at the Fillmore on Sunday night (September 16) in Miami Beach, Fla.
The guys — Gianluca Ginoble, Piero Barone and Ignazio Boschetto — recently chatted with Royal Oak’s Daily Tribune about their recent return to Detroit.
“Well, you know, it’s a good memory,” Ignazio shared about their Il Volo Takes Flight — Live From the Detroit Opera House special which is out on DVD now.
He added, “It was big emotion … and a big moment for us because the Detroit Opera House is so charming, and everybody sang there — Charlie Chaplin and Michael Jackson, everyone. When someone told me that I was shocked. Detroit is the town of everyone. And now it’s the town of Il Volo, as well.”

Never forget to take flight

“Never Forget ‘Il Volo’” were the last words the three young Italian tenors said before leaving the stage at the Essar Centre last night.
And it would be hard to try as they proved why they are an international sensation at last’s night’s performance at the Essar centre.
Nominated for Best New Artist and Best New Album by a Duo or a Group by the Latin Grammy Awards just last year, the young men have reached world-wide stardom all before the age of eighteen.
As approximately 2500 local patrons entered into the stadium, the excitement of the viewers was ever present as they patiently waited for the three teenage boys to take the stage.
With bright white lights cascading over Piero Baron (17), Ignazio Boschetto (16), and Gianluca Ginoble (16), the audience could not hold back their admiration and offered epic applause and resounding cheers of praise.
Members in the audience were found clapping and singing along to several well-known and classical songs including the upbeat “Finiculi, Funicula” and “O Sole Mio,” which the band performed in an encore performance.

Il Volo Entertains Sault Crowd

The Italian singing sensation Il Volo entertained a crowd of about 2,500 at the Essar Centre Friday night.
The three teenage singers who make up the band Piero Barone, Gianluca Ginoble and Ignazio Boschetto have made appearances on television's American Idol last year and have been on tour every since.
The concert, the flagship event of the Marconi Society celebrating their 100 years in Sault Ste. Marie didn't fail to please the adoring fans of the trio who have enjoyed international success and is considered one of the biggest acts out of Italy in decades.
The boys were charismatic with the crowd and had good stage presence. The audience was very responsive and seemed to enjoy the show thoroughly
Il Volo appeals to a wide demographic ranging from teen girls to seniors.
Amazing voices, classy, friendly, overall great concert.
